If They Don't Know About it, They Won't Come! Marketing Virtual Reference

Register for upcoming sessions of this course

Course description

It’s a good bet that not even everyone on your library staff knows about virtual reference, much less John and Jane Public.  How can you raise awareness?  Marketing—but it’s more than a splashy promotion, eye-catching graphics, and clever messages.  They’re advantageous, but success is grounded in constant attention, consistency, listening to customers, creativity, and passion for all that libraries offer.  Great marketing requires great customer service.  In addition to basic marketing guidelines, we will discuss examples of creative promotion, cost-effective tools, design principles and resources, and more.  This two-hour course will introduce concepts and techniques that tempt folks to use your chat service… and keep them coming back.   Questions and good humor encouraged!

 INSTRUCTOR:

Buff Hirko offers expertise in library marketing to local, regional and national audiences.  Believing that like housework, marketing is never done, she emphasizes practical strategies and techniques.  Her presentations include full-day workshops (“It’s All About Them: Successful Virtual Reference Marketing” for Wisconsin Library Services) and teleconferences (“Library Marketing: Tips & Techniques” for the College of DuPage), and she is a frequent library conference speaker.  Buff is the former Statewide Virtual Reference Coordinator for the Washington State Library and co-author (with Mary Ross) of Virtual Reference Training:  The Complete Guide to Providing Anytime, Anywhere Answers.
