Course description

Are you interested in improving library services?  Whether you are a library director, a manager responsible for specific services, or a librarian on the front-line, this practical workshop will help you establish (or enhance) a program of continuous assessment.  While the context for this workshop is for academic libraries, the process is applicable across multiple library sectors.

Through presentation, discussion, and small group activities—and illustrated through a workbook and other forms, worksheets, checklists, and charts depicting performance areas, selected measures, and data sources—participants will learn how to use commonly collected information, user satisfaction and service quality data as practical tools for the evaluation process.

Drs. Bill Nelson and Bob Fernekes will use the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) "Standards for Libraries in Higher Education workbook" <http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlstandards/standardslibraries.htm> as a template for assessing the library.  Their workbook, “Standards and Assessments for Academic Libraries,” (2002) published by ACRL, will be provided to all attendees as part of the fee.

Workshop includes a copy of presenters’ workbook for each attendee.  (It is published by ACRL @ $20.) Workbook information is found at:

http://www.ala.org/ala/acrlbucket/nonserialtitles/standardsassessment.htm

A comprehensive review of the workbook is found in the first issue of the 2004 volume of COLLEGE & UNDERGRADUATE LIBRARIES; a copy is available at:

http://www.aug.edu/~libwnn/Workbook%20Review--Scott.pdf

Current biographical summaries for both presenters are at:  http://www.aug.edu/~libwnn/Bios--Bob%20&%20Bill%20(May06).pdf

What you will learn

By the end of the day you will have an understanding of how to apply these principles and techniques to your own library setting and make substantial progress toward completion of your own workbook based upon professional standards, as adapted to your own library's mission and goals.
