Connexion 103 - Tools for Original Cataloging

Course description

This live, in-person workshop is designed to help catalogers and technical service staff use Connexion Client to complete original cataloging for inclusion in the WorldCat database.  This course covers advanced bibliographic searching techniques, Connexion Client’s original cataloging tools, and Connexion’s authority control features.  Learners will be prepared to contribute original records to WorldCat and earn the associated financial credits for their institutions.

• Combining indexes for more precise searches
• Using qualifiers in command line searches
• Using whole phrase indexes
• Browsing WorldCat indexes
• Guidelines for determining when a new record is needed
• Creating a record from a blank workform
• Deriving new records from existing records
• Extracting metadata from digital resources
• Subscription credits for adding new original records
• Conducting an authority file search
• Browsing authority file indexes
• Conducting searches for expanded authority terms
• Adding authority headings to bibliographic records
• Controlling headings in bibliographic records

This face-to-face class includes supervised exercises to build and practice skills with the Client interface.
